Auerfarm
January 2024
The 4-H Education Center at Auerfarm, nestled in the heart of Greater Hartford, is proud to announce the launch of its transformative Adult Education Series. This initiative is poised to bring together the diverse elements of nature, agriculture, arts, and education to empower the Greater Hartford community. Auerfarm’s commitment to fostering lifelong learning takes a bold leap forward with this series, inviting adults to embark on a journey of discovery and enrichment.
The farm has long since been a center of education hosting a wide range of year-round educational programming primarily for school-aged children and their families. Every year, Auerfarm welcomes thousands of students through field trips, farm-to-school trips, birthday parties, and more. Educational programming includes learning about animal habitats, animal tracks & scat, maple sugaring, and how the farm changes throughout the seasons. The biggest draw is Auerfarm’s summer camp entitled “Auer Camp” where campers participate in a variety of farm activities throughout the summer.
With this new series, Auerfarm hopes to widen its educational scope as well as its audience. This project, led by Director of Education Jonni Marshall, aims to bring more people from the community together in a fun, hands-on environment that is exclusive to adults. Held one evening a month, the program will host local experts to share their wisdom and talents with the community. The class topics will range from wreath making to clean eating and soil health. This program brings in something for everyone!
The inaugural class was hosted by Uconn master gardener, Marlene Mayes and proved to be a huge success with a sold-out class. Held in December, participants enjoyed immersing themselves in the spirit of the season within the serene surroundings of Auerfarm. The convergence of education and creativity left participants with a sense of empowerment in their creation and a deeper connection between nature and art.
Auerfarm’s Adult Education Program underscores the farm’s commitment to providing a diverse range of enriching learning opportunities for the community. By seamlessly integrating elements of nature, agriculture, arts, and education, the aim is to establish a platform for personal growth and community engagement. This new venture will allow Auerfarm to continue to uphold its mission of inspiring children and adults to engage, enjoy, and learn about agriculture, science, and the natural environment.
The next class will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, and will host local cookbook author Terry Walters as she gives a cooking class and crash course on fermentation and the benefits for your gut health!
