Auerfarm’s Spring Adventure Days were held April 12-15 at Auerfarm. The Adventure Days were full of action, knowledge, and calming interactions with animals.
Auerfarm’s curious and brave campers got close with Black Soldier project. The Black Soldier Flies are a harmless multi-beneficial insect. The larva is essential in decomposing organic waste. Children observed the flies’ life stages from eggs to larva to flies. Some children chose to hold flies as they studied their body parts and pondered how to name them.
We also looked inside empty bee hives. It was a fine opportunity to talk about the role bees play in a hive and in nature. We learned how bees communicate with one another.
Hand shovels were put to a good use when children studied soil composition and planted seeds for the farm and to take home.
Interacting with animals is interesting and can be a very calming experience. We taught children how to care for animals, brush them, and be calm and gentle around animals.
Our all-time children’s favorite is always chickens! And the chickens got plenty of attention and fresh green grass from our campers.
Campers showed a lot of imagination creating their own animal faces on paper plates. On Tuesday, we all were scientists studying the inside of a chicken egg.
On Wednesday, the campers from the Outdoor Skills program were ready for a season of camping! We learned how to build campfires. Once the fire was built, they learned how to build a bowl from aluminum foil. We even cooked our farm fresh eggs in the bowls! The children split into teams in each group and built shelters in the Play Forest.
Rainy Thursday did not stop us from walking to the Play Forest, the stream and the bog. To dry off between the outside activities, we had an activity and learned about flower pollination.
Every day children participated in hands-on learning activities. We learned about insects’ body parts by making a paper insect craft.
Thank you to those who made Auerfarm their educational and fun destination during Auerfarm Adventure Days!
