A message from Erica Fearn, Executive Director

Are you as surprised as I am that May is here? April flew by! Auerfarm volunteers were busy in April. Cleaning up the gardens and preparing for planting. I was honored to be invited to judge the Connecticut 4-H Public Speaking Finals. During the virtual event, I was able to see firsthand the power of the 4-H program.  Six young people presented a topic of their choosing. Their poise and speaking quality were fantastic. Their topics were interesting and well researched.

One of the topics resonated with me. The title was “My Walden”. The 4-Her spoke of the preserve in her town where she has ridden her bike almost daily during the pandemic. She described how being outside and watching the changes of the landscape affected her wellbeing. She likened her experience to that of Henry David Thoreau’s time spent at  Walden Pond; living simply and engaging in nature. Her “Walden” resonated with me. I and so many people feel that Auerfarm is our “Walden”. With May flying by, I need the reminder to slow down, take care of me and partake in “Auer Walden”. I hope you will join me and take time to enjoy the natural setting that Auerfarm is here to provide. Let’s enjoy “Auer Walden” together!
